About Local Acts in Alabama

There are more than 35,000 Local Acts in Alabama. Local Acts are laws of the State of Alabama that pertain only to a single county, city, or group of counties or cities, not to the entire state. (For an explanation of the legislative powers of county government in Alabama see this link.). Only recently has any attempt been made to codify these acts. Most are only available in printed form in the Acts of Alabama. Most are not codified in any way whatsoever.

SEARCH TIPS:

Some local acts are general bills of local application (known as GBLA's). These acts apply to classes or categories of counties or cities. These acts are included in the database, but the texts may not specifically name or refer to any particular county within the acts themselves. For this reason, you need to search the acts with subjects in mind as well as places.

Additionally, some Local Acts may have been amended or repealed by other acts. This database may be the only way to find those amendments without reading every subsequent edition of the Acts of Alabama.
